Cage Life by Karin Cox

Unknown | Thursday, October 06, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

Cage Life, by Karin Cox, is a beautifully written book comprised of two short stories. The first story is about a young mom who feels like a prisoner in her own home after having a child and leaving her job and the second centers around an old person Basil and  his love for a younger woman. It's a short story.

I must say Karin Cox has done an excellent job in expressing various human emotions in just fw words.I would certainly recommend this book.

The Book is free on amazon and one can get it from here.

Our Visit To Taj Mahal

Unknown | Wednesday, October 05, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

It was in my wish list to visit Taj Mahal which got fulfilled in May 2011, It was spectacular sight. The day we visited Taj Mahal it was windy and rainy which was quite opposite to the weather conditions which prevail in summer heat of North India , but it was a welcome relief for sure.We reached Taj around 12 pm  and it was so damn crowded.

The Taj Mahal is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in the city of Agra. Like most of India today, Agra is a highly polluted city. This pollution is taking a toll on the beautiful Taj. The once white marble is now a dirty grey. From far, a breath taking view of the Taj is marred by smog. It's sad to see it being damaged from all the smoke and smog of daily life today.

From the main gate till the main entrance of Taj there run rickshaws, one can even take a baggi ( kind of horse ride ) or one can walk as well.Once we reached the main gate of Taj we bought tickets , there were separate queue for men and women but it was heavily crowded because of summer holidays.

Seeing the Taj for the first time was amazing. There is a long walkway from the entrance to the actual structure. Halfway between the walkway and the actual Taj is a step/stage type structure with benches on it. It's the perfect picture setting, because when you sit on the bench, the Taj is behind you as the background.

When you approach the Taj (at the end of the walkway), you have to take off your shoes and turn them in for safekeeping. Shoes are not allowed on the marble. Since we had gone in afternoon, the marble was very hot because of the heat. I wish I had known I had to take my shoes off, because I was wearing sandals and didn't have socks on. My feet were burning because of hear :(

The Taj itself was magnificent. The outside of the building has beautiful marble carvings all along the walls. There are steps and walkways made of marble all around the building, and you can walk all the way around it.

The building and towers are perfectly symmetrical, so whatever is on the left side on the right.

Inside, you can view the marble tombs of Mumtaz and Shah Jahan. These are fake tombs, and the real ones are underneath. There are stairs leading down to the actual tombs, but those have been cordoned off. The inside of the Taj is lit by natural lighting, so it is a bit dark. The walls inside are also beautifully carved, with wonderful inlay work and intricate detail. The inside of the Taj is actually smaller than I has thought, and is much smaller than the outside of the building.

The Taj Mahal is open from 6am to sunset, which is around 7pm. It is closed on Fridays, but those who pray at the mosque next door can still visit it.

Another thing to note is that video cameras are not allowed past the walkway entrance. You can take a video of the Taj from the beginning of the walkway,
but can't go beyond that. You must check in your camera with the camera counter, and retrieve it on your way out. Flash photography is also forbidden inside the Taj.

Once you walk out of the entrance gate, be prepared to be bombarded with kids trying to get you to buy "authentic" Taj Mahal souvenirs.Don't fall for it. These kids get paid by the shop owners to bring in customers.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Taj, and I'm really glad I got a chance to see it. It was definitely a memorable experience!

The New Kindle Touch

Unknown | Wednesday, October 05, 2011 | Best Blogger Tips

I Love to read books, so having an e reader was one of my desires. After reading lot about various e readers watching numerous videos , reviews asking my friends understanding difference between wi-fi and 3g-wifi. I finally decided on buying a kindle 3g wifi.

Again I had one more choice to decide on what color, graphite or white .white or graphite after breaking my head so much on it (I liked both) I decided to buy the white one.

I was elated once I laid my hands my brand new Kindle :)  i was looking for various books to read, there are so many free classics and many more books it's absolute fun for any book reader.

But Today Amazon came out with touchscreen Kindle and its just a little over a month since my purchase .I really wished I should have delayed my purchase then probably I would have been having my kindle touchscreen :(

I called up Amazon so as to see if I can return my current device and upgrade to the new touchscreen but the answer was negative as it was past one month since I purchased my e reader.

Now I just stay with my current kindle and use it for a while and then probably I can upgrade to a newer one.

But I love my Kindle :)

Delicious Sabudana Khichdi (Sago flavoured with chilli-peanut powder)

Unknown | Tuesday, October 04, 2011 | | Best Blogger Tips

The first time ever that I made Sabudana Khichdi, Today was 8th day of Navratri so me and my husband have both kept fast,I did get sabudana on Sunday but had never made it so was undecided wether I should try it or not , today morning when I was on call with mom she gave me sabudana recipe which I found very simple to make and luckily I had all ingredients to make it.I remember as a child I  never used to like it but today when I made it myself I found it so delectable So I'm sure to make it again :) Sabudana Khichdi is a pretty tricky proposition It matters how you soak the sabudana and one should not soak for too long, or in too much water that all you get is starchy mush, or on the other hand, a little less water and it would roll off like balls of mercury away from  your palm. Here I am posting my tried and tested method of making this amazing khichdi.
Ingredients:-
  1. 2 cups of Sabudana.
  2. 4-5 tbsp of raw peanut powder
  3. 4-5 Green chili finely chopped
  4. 2 Medium potatoes cut into big pieces
  5. 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  6. 7-8 Curry Leaves
  7. 1/2 tbsp of sugar
  8. 1/2 cup finely chopped coriander
  9. 2 tbsp of lime juice
  10. 1 tbsp of red chili powder
  11. 1 tbsp of oil
  12. Salt to taste.
Method :-
  1. Toss the sabudana into a big bowl and wash it under the tap. Allow it to drain
  2. Keep it this way for 2 hours at least covered with a lid, after an hour  just toss it but don't touch it with your hands or spoon
  3. Just before cooking add 1 1/2 spoons of salt to the sabudana as it soaks up the salt really well.
  4. Boil the potatoes and cut it into large pieces or just coarsely mash with your hands into big pieces.
  5. Take a Pan, add oil to it, once heated add cumin seeds, green chili and curry leaves, let it cook for a while.
  6. Add groundnut powder to this mixture and keep the flame very low and keep on stirring it for abut 2 minutes.
  7. Add boiled potatoes to this mixture mix it well and let it cook for about 5 minutes.
  8. Now add soaked sabudana to this , mix it lightly, add red chili powder and sugar to this mixture.
  9. Cook it on a low flame by covering it with a lid and constant stirring for about 20 minutes.
  10. Garnish it with a dash of lime and finely chopped coriander leaves.
  11. Serve hot with curd by its side.

So we stood in queue for a while and were flanked by guides, we did took one guide but it wasn't worth as he knew quite little.

We reached inside roamed around the gardens took lots of pictures and the beautiful Taj , words cannot express the magnificent beauty of Taj.

About Taj Mahal
In December 1631, the fifth Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, commenced the construction of one of the greatest monuments of all time, the Taj Mahal. It is a mausoleum built in the memory of his beloved and favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, fulfilling one of the promises that he made to her as she lay on her deathbed: To erect a monument to match her beauty.

It is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world, and some Western historians have noted that its architectural beauty has never been surpassed. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India. Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon.

It was a Friday evening and I was not sure what to cook we wanted to have something light, so my husband came up with the idea of making Besan Cheela, it's light and hardly takes time to cook.So I collated all things I would need to make it and we made it together.

Food items prepared with gram flour are very tasty. It tastes mildly sweet, it’s also gluten free and famously known for its anti-diabetic properties. After bajjias and pakoras, my next favorite item with besan is dosas. Besan Dosa is a traditional Indian breakfast and evening snack item, prepared by mixing gram flour with a variety of finely chopped vegetables. The dosas are usually served with chutneys, It's  quite easy to prepare and one can experiment with ingredient quantities quite liberally. They are not that good when they get cold, so prepare them just before mealtime.

Ingredients :-
  1. 2 cups of gram flour
  2. 1 big onion,
  3. 2 green chillies,
  4. 2 tbsp of cilantro - finely chopped
  5. 1 tomato finely chopped
  6. 1 cumin seeds
  7. 1 tsp of carom seeds
  8. 2 tbsp of roasted semolina
  9. salt to taste
Method :-
  1. In a Bowl add cumin, ajwan, semolina and salt. Mix to combine.
  2. Add the finely chopped vegetables. By gradually adding water, about 1 to 2 cups, mix and prepare besan batter to a medium-thick pouring consistency, like idly batter.
  3. Heat a non stick pan  grease it with half-cut whole onion.
  4. When the pan is hot, pour ladleful of batter and spread into thin round. Sprinkle half teaspoon of oil or ghee on the top. Wait for bubbles to appear. When the underside starts to brown, gently lift and turn to other side. Cook the dosa until the second side is lightly browned.
  5. Serve it with Chutney Or Ketchup.
